What are Lines & Wrinkles?

Lines and wrinkles are the natural visible markers of the skin’s ageing process. They range from fine, superficial surface lines to deep-set folds and creases. While they are a normal part of maturation, their appearance is often influenced by the gradual loss of the skin’s structural support system. For many, these lines can result in a tired or stressed appearance, leading to a desire for treatments that restore a smoother, more rejuvenated complexion without losing natural facial expression.

How Lines & Wrinkles Form

The development of wrinkles is a multi-layered process involving biological shifts and external influences:

  • Depletion of Collagen and Elastin: From our mid-20s, the body produces less collagen (which provides strength) and elastin (which provides "snap-back"). As these fibres weaken and diminish, the skin becomes thinner and less resilient, allowing lines to form.

  • Repetitive Facial Expressions: Dynamic lines are caused by years of repeated muscle movements, such as squinting, frowning, or smiling. Over time, these "expression lines" become static, meaning they remain visible even when the face is at rest.

  • Reduced Hyaluronic Acid: This naturally occurring molecule keeps the skin hydrated and "plumped." As levels drop, the skin loses volume and moisture, making fine lines more prominent.

  • Environmental Damage: UV radiation from the sun is responsible for up to 80% of visible skin ageing. It creates "free radicals" that aggressively break down the skin's support structure, leading to premature wrinkling and a leathery texture.

How to Treat Lines & Wrinkles

At Home: Jolanta’s Advice

A consistent, high-quality skincare regime is your first line of defence in managing the depth and appearance of wrinkles:

  • Introduce Retinoids: Incorporate a Vitamin A derivative (Retinol or Retinal) into your evening routine. This is the gold standard for stimulating collagen production and accelerating cell turnover to smooth the skin surface.

  • Antioxidant Protection: Use a Vitamin C serum every morning. Antioxidants neutralise the free radicals caused by UV light and pollution, preventing further structural damage.

  • Hyaluronic Acid Serums: Apply to damp skin to lock in moisture, which immediately plumps the skin and softens the appearance of fine dehydration lines.

  • Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF: This is essential. Without daily protection from UV rays, other anti-ageing treatments will be significantly less effective.

At SCA Clinic

We offer a suite of advanced clinical treatments to smooth existing lines and stimulate your skin's natural regenerative powers:

  • Consultations for the Relaxation of Lines: Following a consultation, if appropriate, a prescription-only treatment may be recommended to temporarily relax the muscles responsible for dynamic expression lines (such as "crow's feet" or "frown lines").

  • Dermal Fillers: We use hyaluronic acid-based fillers to soften deeper folds (like the nasolabial folds from nose to mouth) and restore lost volume that contributes to sagging and wrinkling.

  • Profhilo®: A bio-remodelling treatment that intensely hydrates the skin from within, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin for an overall smoother texture.

  • RF Microneedling (Sylfirm X): This advanced technology uses radiofrequency energy to heat the deeper layers of the skin, causing immediate tightening and long-term collagen growth to reduce wrinkle depth.

  • Fractional CO2 Laser: This powerful resurfacing tool removes damaged skin layers and triggers a deep healing response, effectively smoothing out fine lines and deeper wrinkles.

  • Polynucleotides: An innovative regenerative treatment that uses DNA fractions to repair and renew skin cells, particularly effective for the delicate skin around the eyes and mouth.
