What is Sclerotherapy at South Coast Aesthetic Clinic?
At South Coast Aesthetic Clinic, we provide a highly effective, clinical solution for the management of unsightly leg veins through Microsclerotherapy. This gold-standard procedure is specifically designed to help refine the appearance of spider veins and thread veins, which often appear as red, blue, or purple webs on the surface of the legs. Led by Jolanta, our clinic offers a bespoke approach to leg rejuvenation, combining technical precision with a deep understanding of vascular aesthetics. For patients with more complex concerns, Jolanta performs targeted injectables for legs, ensuring a comprehensive pathway to smoother, clearer skin.
How Sclerotherapy Works
Microsclerotherapy involves the precise injection of a specialised sclerosing agent directly into the problematic veins using an exceptionally fine needle. This solution acts by gently irritating the internal lining of the vessel, causing the vein walls to stick together and the blood to be redirected to healthier, deeper veins. Once the treated vein is sealed, it is naturally and gradually absorbed by the body’s lymphatic system. To ensure the most effective clinical outcome, the application of compression following the procedure is essential, as it helps keep the vein walls collapsed during the initial healing phase.
What Sclerotherapy Can Address
Spider Veins: Designed to help fade the small, web-like clusters of red or blue veins.
Thread Veins: May improve the appearance of individual broken capillaries on the legs.
Skin Clarity: Utilised to manage the overall discolouration caused by superficial vascular patterns.
Confidence Restoration: Helps to alleviate the self-consciousness often associated with baring the legs in summer or evening wear.
Vascular Refinement: A targeted approach for veins that are too large for laser treatment but do not require surgical intervention.
Strategic Vascular Partnership
We believe in a holistic and safe approach to vascular health. While Jolanta specialises in the aesthetic treatment of superficial leg veins, we recognise that some concerns may stem from deeper venous insufficiency. If our clinical assessment indicates that more significant vascular intervention is required to target your leg veins safely, Jolanta works in close collaboration with Dr Simon Payne, a Consultant General and Vascular Surgeon. This partnership ensures that every patient at South Coast Aesthetic Clinic receives the most appropriate level of care, whether purely aesthetic or medically surgical.
FAQs
Is this treatment safe? At South Coast Aesthetic Clinic, your safety is paramount. Microsclerotherapy has been utilised for decades with an excellent safety profile. However, it is a medical procedure and carries potential risks such as temporary hyperpigmentation (staining), minor skin irritation, or, very rarely, small ulcers. A full medical screening is conducted prior to treatment to ensure your suitability.
Is the treatment painful? Most patients experience only minor discomfort, often described as a series of small pinpricks or a slight stinging sensation that lasts for a few seconds as the solution is injected. Because the needles are so fine, the procedure is generally very well-tolerated without the need for anaesthesia.
When will I see results? Results are not immediate. The treated veins will often look bruised or more prominent initially before they begin to fade. Significant improvement is typically observed between 4 and 12 weeks post-treatment. Depending on the extent of the veins, a course of 2 to 4 sessions may be recommended for optimum results.
What is the downtime? Downtime is minimal in terms of daily activity; you are encouraged to walk immediately after the procedure. However, you will need to wear medical-grade compression stockings for a specified period (usually 7 to 14 days) to support the success of the treatment. You should avoid strenuous leg exercises and direct sun exposure for at least two weeks.
Aftercare Guidelines
Wear your prescribed compression stockings exactly as directed by Jolanta.
Walk for at least 20–30 minutes daily to maintain healthy circulation.
Avoid hot baths, saunas, or sunbeds for at least two weeks post-treatment.
Refrain from high-impact leg exercises (running, heavy weights) for 7–10 days.
Apply any recommended soothing gels or creams to managed areas as instructed.
Practitioner & Safety Note
All vascular treatments at South Coast Aesthetic Clinic are subject to a thorough face-to-face consultation. During this assessment, Jolanta will evaluate your veins to determine if Microsclerotherapy is the correct pathway or if a referral to our Consultant Vascular Surgeon, Dr Simon Payne, is necessary. This ensures your treatment is not only aesthetic but clinically sound and safe.
